Hand Forged Iron and Copper Combine, to Create a Contemporary Style

Hand-forged iron doesn’t suggest “contemporary” but the truth is that iron is a highly versatile medium that will become anything in the hands of a master artisan. In the world of iron, we use techniques that are centuries old, to produce a piece that fits perfectly into even the most contemporary environment. We created the “Rushton” series with an eye toward a more contemporary application. It combines clean straight lines, with the rich, earthy, almost abstract look of fired copper.

To achieve the copper patina that we want, we employ an age-old process that copper-smiths used to anneal (or soften) the copper so that it is more workable. We build a huge hardwood fire, and lay the copper sheet on the super-hot coals until we reach a critical temperature. The sheet is then removed, flipped over on the ground, and quenched with a proprietary blend of natural mineral waters. This draws out the incredible colors that give our copper its unique character.

Every firing produces a different result. Colors range from gorgeous reds and browns, to deep purples and blacks…all scorched into the rich-coppery substrate.

It is always so stunning to see the beautiful results of combining a contemporary aesthetic with an age-old process or material. In fact, so much of what our artisan-blacksmiths do here in the forge, is in line with the “rustic-elegant” design trend we all see and love. In some ways, we help people conduct their very modern lifestyle, in a wonderful environment that hearkens back to a simpler time and place. And we do that across a wide range of styles including old-world, rustic, casual and traditional.

We are green! It is possible to achieve wonderful copper patinas (as some do) by using harsh chemicals, but we have chosen to use methods that were green long before it became a buzz-word…because we believe that beauty doesn’t have to pollute the planet.
